New RenaultSport Megane

  1. double post

  2. I agree with you, impressive although not difficult to dare think what the Trophy set up might do as it's identical to a Cup optioned car. The lighter more fade resistant brakes won't make any measurable difference there and the 20 ponies will mean a few more km/h but essentially it will be the same experience for 99% of billies.

  3. Again, why ? It's a Cup equipped car with 20 additional HP (and the wrong size wheels for track days).

The word Trophy is marketing genius as already proven by the MK3 Trophy.

  4. Isnt the trophy usually just a normal cup with a few stickers on it?

  5. The new one has more power and a different exhaust I think.

  6. Matt Prior by his own admission loves the Hyundai so I would take that with a pinch of salt, also moaning about a firm ride, who cares it's a performance car. I would drive one yourself instead of worrying about what all the journalists say. It certainly looks the best out of all them that's for sure.

  7. I currently own a Trophy-R.

I’ve also test driven the Performance version of the i30N (with LSD) and have been to a track day where Hyundai let a range of people drive it on track.

    The i30N is not a Trophy-R.

But not many people want a Trophy-R in any case — it’s a special car that’s not easy to live with as a daily driver. The i30N would be...and it still goes hard.

Here in Australia, it comes with a 5 yr warranty that includes non-competitive track day cover. And it looks to be about $10-15k cheaper than the Meg IV RS Trophy, which I’m yet to drive. The Meg would need to be bloody good to sway me away from the i30N if I was in a buying mood. Which I’m not — I’m happy with my Trophy-R. But therein lies Renault’s problem.

  8. Hows the new car experience going?

  9. Good! I really like it so far!

Still only on around 750 miles, but so far it's all good. Had a small problem with Renault forgetting to install the RS Monitor software, but that's been sorted now.

Feels a lot like the 250 but a bit more refined. Even the Cup suspension isn't as hard as the magazines make out, I think it's better dampened than the 250 was.

Brakes are nice and not over-servoed like the Clio. The rear wheel steering is pretty awesome when you really turn it into a roundabout. I wasn't planning on using it on trackdays but I'd quite like to take it somewhere to really get a feel for the thing at speed.

  10. Dropped into dealer this morning while the wife’s car was getting serviced at LR.

Volcanic orange with black wheels and bimetallic brakes. Got to admit I was fair impressed with it. Looks very purposeful. The paint is epic.

Interior is leagues ahead of mk3. STD seats are very good.

Only thing I did not like is the chrome door trims. Small cheese and easily sorted. Think they would make the car better if it was black along with door handles. Especially in the orange colour.

Roll on the official trophy announcement to see if it’s worth holding out for and balance the costs against a proper specced 280.

  11. They would have struggled to make the interior any worse than the MK3 ha ha

  12. Expensive Stickers!

  13. try a mk2 then!..straight out of a datsun cherry!

  14. Fifth gear have just done a review of the new megane vs civic type r, audi s3 and leon cupra. You might be surprised which car wins.

  15. Think the Angelsey circuit definitely suited the Mégane, looked like they were driving according to it's strengths.

  16. This video has the first two tests but not the third?

  17. Not the most scientific of tests, but it seems they liked the Megane. Different cars, but both very capable it seems.

  18. Doesn’t look like anything in it driving wise.
Looks wise it’s an easy victory for the RS.

  19. Had a good drive in a manual cupped 280 today whilst my Cup-S was in for its 2 year service.

    Things I like:
Drives really well. So planted and instantly liked the 4 wheel steer / diff combo. I think in a corner, you would be able to hold the speed and accelerator earlier and therefore longer than in the Cup-S.
Damping is slightly softer and a bit more compromising than my Cup-S. This is not a bad thing for me, but it’s certainly a bit more composed and grown up feel to it.
Looks wise I think they’ve absolutely nailed it. This was Volcanic Orange with dark 19” wheels and I think looks a fair bit better than my Cup-S (and so much better looking than any of the competition).
More grown up interior with better quality throughout compared to previous, however still not nearing German feel of quality.
Seats much better than previous standard seats.

    Things I don’t like:
Steering is not as good as Cup-S, feels slightly less connected and this is the cars only real down-side.
Engine noise being faked into the cabin is an annoying trend. Unnecessary, surely it can be turned off.

Overall a very good package, and one that I’d never look past if I was in for a hot hatch (although would, despite comments on seats) be waiting for a Recaro’d Trophy).
I think it feels just about better than the Cup-S, but not enough for me to want to replace mine with one.

  20. Any thoughts about comfort and space for rear passengers? Seemed a bit cramped in the back to me

  21. Not massive space, but more than MK3 and better access obviously.
Fine for a young family, not ideal if you regularly have a car full of adults though (which in my case is a requirement on average less than once a year).

  22. Got to admit the recent issues around this new car have started to get my spidey sense tingling that there is an issue brewing under the surface around them.

Renault taking a step back, removing the order books and further delays on ones that are on the books. Not to mention the common theme on forums around the 'spanner' dash alarm and the seemingly (reading actual reviews by those who have experienced it) inability for Renault to sort the issue.

Granted the order book closure seems to be around the new emmissions constraints that are now in force, but the electrical/ component potential issues, which in a new car can maybe be expected for a period of real world use by customers does raise an eyebrow. You would think issues would have been sorted, as this product was not exactly rushed to markert was it lol.

Maybe a giant leap, but headgasket-gate anyone? I hope not.

  23. At least the engines aren't failing like the FRS's! Most new cars have teething issues I am sure they'll sort it. I would not be concerned about them closing order books, it's probably just because they can't meet the demand and the new emission requirement has put a spanner in the works (excuse the pun). Seems pointless this new emission rule, especially when there are a shit ton of old shit heaps on the road chucking black diesel smoke out the back. I actually fucking hate diesel cars and hate being behind them on the road as they just stink. When they are old rust buckets or smokers it's even worse. Government should worry about that more than nit picking on the output of new engines. Even at their worst they're likely to be much much cleaner than most of these old cars on our roads. It's a joke. I'll get off my soap box now sorry lads!

  24. seeing Ford and Porsche also closing orders until new emissions control's are sorted out

  25. Any mroe updates on the Trophy or R version?

  26. Not seen any. All I have seen is remaps getting 50bhp out of the engine (RST)

  27. It would be lovely if any of them were available!

  28. You have to be mad to remap/modify a brand new car, especially one with an whole new unproven engine.

At least give the engine good time to develop any teething problems/design flaws.

    Focus RS springs to mind.

  29. Has anyone ordered a mk4 yet, or are the majority waiting for the trophy version

  30. There’s two where I live so they’ve definitely sold a few

  31. Need some more pics!

I saw the Alpine in grey on a Lotus site and it looks awesome in that colour:

  34. Evo mag has a report on the trophy.Looks decent, but not the class leader.

  35. Dunno, I think it looks great, people should drive it before making up their minds...

I've driven both cup and non cup, manual and EDC. Definitely stepped away from what they used to be.

  37. Please give us a more analytical review. What are the main differences compared to a stock 265?
